Man Accused of Training Dog to Illegally Dump Waste in Sicily

Italian authorities in Sicily have accused a man of training his dog to deposit rubbish bags along roadsides, a tactic he allegedly employed to circumvent surveillance cameras.

Footage released by the Italian police depicts a small dog walking along a road in Catania’s San Giorgio district. The animal, carrying a bag of refuse in its mouth, subsequently drops the item near the roadside. This behavior was reportedly observed and recorded by surveillance systems over two successive days.

Local officials have put forward these recorded actions as evidence, stating that they “leave little room for doubt” regarding the dog’s deliberate training for waste disposal. The implication is that the owner orchestrated this method to avoid being captured on camera while discarding trash.

“Ingenuity can never become an alibi for incivility,” the City of Catania communicated via its official Facebook page. Officials further characterized the dog’s actions as both “cunning” and “doubly wrong.” They highlighted that the man was allegedly “exploiting the unwitting four-legged friend.” The statement concluded by asserting that “Respect for decorum and the environment is everyone’s duty.”

The official announcement did not specify whether any charges or actions had been initiated against the individual. Fly-tipping remains an illegal activity and a persistent problem across Italy. In response, local authorities have been intensifying their efforts to manage this issue, incorporating measures like surveillance cameras to identify and apprehend those responsible for illegal waste disposal.
